What does lack of sleep mean for you and your child?

Infant and toddler sleep problems can have a detrimental effect on parental mood (i.e. Depression and anxiety), marital satisfaction and parental stress level.

Increasing evidence shows that sleep disruption or lack of sleep is harmful to children’s learning ability, concentration, mood, attention, behavior. Sleep deprivation in children has been linked to, lowered immune systems, diabetes, depression, hindered physical development, stress and anxiety.

Latest research states that children under the age of five years old who don’t get sufficient sleep are TWICE as likely to become obese.

Sleep deprived children are more likely to develop behavioral disorders.

Frequently asked questions.

How is your program different from others on the internet?

The ‘Finally Get Some Sleep’ program is NOT a one size fits all sleep training method. It is a program which is designed for you and your unique sleep circumstances. Every family and child is different. Your sleep needs are different from any other family and I design a sleep plan specific to your family.

How long until we see real results?

You can usually start seeing real results as soon as three days. Remember, each and every child is different, what works for one child may not work for another. Together we work out a realistic plan of what we think will work for your child.

Do I need to live in the Seattle area?

No you don’t. Many of my clients live out of the Pacific Northwest (and even out of the country!). We can have meetings via skype and communicate via email and telephone.

What is the best age to start?

I don’t advise starting sleep training until your child is at least 3 months old.

Won’t my child teach themselves to sleep through the night/give up the pacifier, etc?

Your child most certainly will, but I can’t tell you when that will be. All children have the urge to grow up, but that may not be until they are around 4 or 5 years old. That is a lot of sleepless nights!

Will I have to leave my child to cry it out?

No, I’m not a fan of just leaving a child to cry alone. I think it is hard for the parents to listen to, and goes against a parents instinct to go to their crying child, it is also really hard on the child. They don’t understand why you are not coming to them.

That said, it doesn’t mean your child will not cry. I don’t think there is any sleep training method which is totally cry free. Your child will not be crying because they are being ignored, they may cry because they are frustrated that they are having to learn how to go to sleep by themselves and are having to learn something new!

What happens if we have a really bad night?

Sometimes, something unexpected may happen. Feel assured that this is perfectly normal. If you need additional support, you can always email me and I will get back to you the same day with a plan to move on. When you sign up to the ‘Finally Get Some Sleep’ package you are not alone, I am always on hand to support you.

Why does it take so long?

We start with a comprehensive questionnaire, a week long sleep diary and a know your child quiz. I then assess these and come up with a few different techniques you can implement. We then discuss these different techniques and you let me know which one you want to proceed with. You know your child better than anybody and what will work for your family. I then teach you how to use the technique and how best to implement it.

Quite often families are trying to change nap time habits as well as nighttime habits. As we want the sleep training to be as pain free for everyone involved we will take things slowly and work on one issue at a time.

Most sleep issues we can see real results in as few as three nights, but having a longer time to work together ensures all issues are dealt with.
